Chicago's MLB Team Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major Multi-Million Dollar Deal.
In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Financial Terms and Incentives
The contract grants a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the final year.
Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
- $500K for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.
The contract also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 in February, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Despite fanning 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The next night in the final against the USA, he blasted a tying homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual title triumph.
The power hitter is slated to be unveiled at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
