Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
