No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Criminal Groups
At least 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 people were detained.
Intense confrontations erupted when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.
The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Community Response
Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the mission, along with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
