An extensive manufacturing complex located on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing radioactive pollution after a government taskforce found traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants within the site, that includes companies shipping frozen marine products.

The FDA released an warning advising distributors and retailers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, although the found amount was well under the authority's action threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an immediate risk to the public.

The FDA explained: “The primary impact on health of worry following extended, repeated small amount contact (for example through eating of contaminated products or water over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Examinations

Radiation scans revealed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one additional manufacturing facilities, but said they would promptly receive cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.
