US Online Personality Fined Following Mass Electric Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

NSW authorities have issued a fine against an American social media personality and handed out two traffic infringement notices for reported negligent driving after a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Incident: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of around 40 individuals riding electric bikes and motorbikes travelled along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The riders then turned around and rode through the downtown area and Haymarket.

"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.

Police said they did not immediately pursue the riders due to safety concerns but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Influencer

Later in the week, police announced they had issued the American online personality known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a penalty of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points each, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4 million followers on YouTube and more than 1.2m on the social media app.

Creator's Response

The content creator gave comments to a major newspaper this week after the incident spread rapidly on news sites and social media, saying he was sorry for giving "bike life" a negative image.

"I accept the blame. It was one of the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to come here respecting the rules and standards of Sydney. When I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we turn around, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has prompted growing calls for regulation. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," he said. "We must make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are given the authority to crack down, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to dispose of them."

The state reported over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in 2024. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that figure jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
